[EP] Dunn ThaThugPoet - The Burning Bridge Tape

Born Dorian J. Mathis in Savannah, Georgia to a struggling single mother, Dunn Thathugpoet has fought his way through trials and tribulations and is finally set to release his debut project, The Burning Bridge Tape in May. The artist has grown up listening to old school music – his idol, the “King of Pop,” is Michael Jackson, who Dunn says influences his music. Other favorites and musical influences include Tupac, Kendrick Lamar, JCole, Rick James, and Biggie, “just to name a few.”

At the young age of 11, the artist found himself filling notebooks full of rhymes and song ideas, and recording himself on cassette tapes. “I didn’t really take it seriously until I was 18, when I finally recorded songs from yearas ago,” says the rapper, who rapped in the streets for fun and performed in shows as a “hype man.” While he recorded his first project in 2011, the songs were never published due to unforeseen circumstances. Now, years later, the artist’s dream is finally coming to fruition. The Burning Bridge Tape is a testimony of closing a chapter on life, to finally completing and achieving his life’s dream, which is the release of a hit album. It serves as a release of all of the struggles and difficulties the artist has faced to get where he is today. Dunn speaks about one of his favorite tracks, “Blue Money,” which is about trying to “be major,” says the artist, “some of us don't know how it feels to always have blue hundreds to keep coming into your pockets and live that major life.”

Dunn ThaThugPoet isn’t stopping at music – his goal is to be a star of many platforms. With a background in basketball and acting, the sky is the limit for Dunn, who is amped to break out and participate in all different platforms of art. “Or maybe I’ll invest in a company. Help someone out,” laughs the artist, who isn’t afraid to add entrepreneur to his lengthy resume. One thing is certain: Big dreams yield big results, which is good news for Dunn ThaThugPoet, who continues to go for gold.

[Single] Don Richie (@realdonrichie) - No Chill

Success has been a long time coming for artist Don Richie, born Kadarrious Fox, the child of a single mother in a quaint Mississippi town. Don Richie picked up the microphone at an extremely young age, participating in talent shows, ultimately dropping his first mix tape before he’d even entered high school. “I grew up listening to the music my mother would play, and I loved it’s energy,” says Richie, “I knew it was my calling. It’s my purpose.” A troubled upbringing tarnished his youth, but the young performer eventually realized his potential and grew from his experiences into the talented, unique artist he is today.

It hasn’t been an easy climb. Don Richie moved out of his childhood home at 21 and “jumped off into the world,” with big dreams of making it as an independent artist. He found himself homeless during a stint in Atlanta, where he’d perform in clubs, but return to a motel or car for the night. “There were nights I slept on the train,” admits the artist. Richie’s determination has paid off tenfold, however, with the release of his album Lost in my Thoughts, which will make its debut on June 25

th, and is comprised of Don Richie’s life’s work in the culmination of a variety of unreleased tracks. “It’s about my whole transition, from Mississippi, to Michigan, to Atlanta, and then back home.” “Smile,” an upbeat positive track, is a reminder that even amidst trials and struggle it’s imperative to stay positive, which Richie says is one of the most important on the album. Another project, which will debut in the fall of 2016, will be a self-titled EP, #RichIsRare, which gets its name from Don Richie’s brand. A collection of eight original tracks, the album will reference the artist’s overarching philosophy that one should live their life rich in energy, spirit, and life, not necessarily in money. “Money don’t make you rich,” says Richie. The EP is called #RichIsRare, because it’s rare to be rich in Grenada, Mississippi, and that’s what Don Richie strives to be.

Positivity, focus, and determination have brought Don Richie from darkness to light, giving him a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become the star he’s always meant to be.

Rushbilli Gets Back in the Saddle (From the Big Easy to the Big House and Back Again)

Everyone has a past and it’s often those with one's paved with hard times that make the best stories. Especially when those people pull themselves up and are able to breakaway from past mistakes and hardships, and more onward. Rushbilli is one of those people who have seen the worst of times, but isn’t about to let his stint in prison define him for the rest of his life. Instead, it’s pushing him towards his goals and getting him back into the rap game. He’s not only an artist, he’s also got a business mindset that sets him apart from many of his peers; working on his music and his label as he starts to reinvest in his artistry. It’s been awhile since he’s been at it, but before his stint in prison - he did his fair share of touring and went everywhere from Florida to California. Today he’s got some things planned with the SCM Awards, as well as having the world enjoy his single, “I’m That Guy” which features Boosie BadAzz and Kief Brown.

Spotlight on L-Smooth

Rodney Dawson admits he has a lot of faith in his friend and business partner, L-Smooth. So much faith, the two quit their jobs working in the carpet industry together to delve into the world of hip hop and formed an independent label titled Street City Enterprises.

“We first met on the job and used to always listen to music together,” stated Dawson. “One day I told him I like what you’re doing. Let’s go into business together and that’s when we created the company. I have so much faith in him, it’s kind of ridiculous!”

So far, that faith in his friend is paying off. His debut single from the upcoming album, “Pillow Cases,” has received about 10,000 radio spins online and has sold about 200 copies and growing.

We’re pretty confident this project is going to take us to the next level,” stated Dawson, who is also L-Smooth’s manager. “He is very talented. Think old-school hip hop combined with the sounds of today.”

According to Dawson, one word that describes his talented friend is “authentic.”

Everything he raps about is based on how he lives. He doesn’t rhyme about things he’s not experienced. He’s doing straight, authentic hip hop. He a true lyricist,” he stressed.

L-Smooth’s upcoming album will feature 13 relatable tracks fans of hip hop can enjoy and bob their heads to. A lot of hard work and sleepless nights have gone into perfecting the project.

He really, really takes his time with his music. Each song he creates, he has to perfect it in every way. If it’s not mixed and mastered right he won’t put it out there. He’s all about quality,” explained Dawson.

Spotlight on Kilo M.O.E.

Influenced by Wu-Tang Clan, LL Cool J and Nas, hip hop artist Kilo M.O.E is one independent artist on the verge of taking his career to the next level with this release of his first major album titled “Gods and Generalz.”

I really think it’s going to do real well. I strayed away from what I normally do. I sing a little bit on there,” explained Kilo. “It cuts really deep into the psyche of where everybody stands right now with hip hop. A lot of people don’t like where hip hop is going. I address that in my music. It just really cuts deep. It also really hits home as to who I am, what I stand for and what I represent.”

The talented artist started working on his latest masterpiece in late 2014 in Phoenix, Arizona with producer Tony Martinez of Good Fellas Music. It’s taken about a year to get the album ready for its September 2016 release—but he says it’s been worth the wait.

The whole concept of the album is really more of an audio movie. It’s a final battle between gods and generals. It’s real melodic. It has a lot of bars and hooks,” explained Kilo.

He recently dropped the first single from the album late last month. It’s a catchy tune titled “Out Here Winning.” As the title might suggest, the song is about working hard to make it to the top.

It’s just basically a celebration and testament of the amount of work we’ve put into the project and how I got here and where I’m going next,” he stated.

According to Kilo, while he says his fans will enjoy all the tracks on the upcoming album, he says his favorite single from the project is “Blue Diamond.” He hopes when fans here that track and others, they’ll feel inspired to conquer the world.

“I’m about big giant hooks and anthems. I’m always going to touch on something that’s going to be big for the human psyche. I’m always going to challenge somebody to really think about what they see, what they do,” stated Kilo. “I make music for leaders. I motivate. I inspire. I try to raise people to be taller than just the average joe.”

[Single] Zay Avenue (@Zayavenue) - Pharoahs in America

Candid, powerful, and refreshingly honest, Zay Avenue (Born Willie James Parker) is a breath of fresh air; true poetry to escape a noisy world. The word “escape” embodies much of the meaning behind the artist’s work. Raised amidst the struggles of a difficult upbringing in the streets of Indianapolis, music was “an escape from reality.” While the artist and performer has triumphed through his struggles, his upbringing remains a significant part of who he is as a musician and man. So much so, that the “Avenue” in his stage name “Zay Avenue” is an homage to Drexel Avenue, the street where Zay Avenue was raised. Zay’s love for music, sparked by being the youngest son of old school singers, is deeply rooted in its complexity, it’s ability to unify and give hope through freedom of expression.

Zay Avenue’s most recent single (which released on April 10th), “Pharaoh’s in America,” comes at a perfect time for a hurting world. While news headlines show signs of struggle, politics, racial disparity, and hardships as a country, “Pharaohs in America” is a much-needed glimmer of hope. “It’s mostly about unity,” says the musician, “and it’s about giving a voice to those without one.”

Zay’s music, much like the man himself, is original in more ways than one. The artist stands out from the crowd by writing more than just rap. His music is artwork, each word seeped in metaphor and inspiration.

Looking forward to the future, the artist’s most prominent goal is to spread his message and story far and wide. “The goal is to be heard,” admits Zay Avenue, and while he mostly means that in terms of his music, his real motivation is to truly be heard – to reach people at their core and inspire change.

Spotlight on Vixen Fox (@STUDIO_JUNKIE)

The world desperately needs more artists like Vixen Fox. Unchained to any genre or musical philosophy, Vixen is committed to making great music for great music’s sake, and continues to surprise with her talent and variety. “Music inspires me, the way it transforms and transcends. The way you can make it entirely how you want to be,” says the foxy artist, who lives up to her stage name in more ways than one. Raised in Brooklyn, Vixen turned to poetry and writing as an escape from countless struggles. Years later, after an invitation from a friend prompted a visit to a music studio, she put words to music and has since been an artist to be reckoned with.

Unlike many artists in the music industry, Vixen refuses to be tied to any particular musical dogma. In fact, some of her favorite musicians and biggest inspirations venture far from the rap scene. For example, you’d often find her rocking out to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dean Martin, and Bon Jovi. “I want to be genre-less. My next song might be a rock song,” laughs Vixen Fox. “My music is so different, it doesn’t sound (to me, anyway) like anybody elses. I want to bring different sounds and techniques. Crazy sounds, crazy words.”

Crazy sounds and words, indeed. Her single, “About You,” is a metaphorical masterpiece. The song is based on an internal conversation Vixen has had with herself and her many personalities. The song’s lyrics, “I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life and now here you are,” would make one think she’s talking about a significant other, but in fact, she’s reflecting on herself and is proud of the person she’s talking with – which happens to be her.

Vixen is a person – and artist – people will just want to be around. Her persona exudes a cheerful mystery; she is no one thing, but is a culmination of people wrapped into one incredibly talented and unique package. Her goals for the future are to make waves for independent artists everywhere – suggesting, even the possibility of creating her own independent radio station. “There are so many great artists out there we’ll never get to hear. I want to make music last, and not get boring.” Boring is certainly a word you’ll never find yourself using around Vixen Fox.

Spotlight on Erica Orange (@EricaOrange1)

Erica Orange has always had a profound love for music, but it wasn’t until she had the opportunity to get in the studio and record that she saw its true potential as a career. Once she’d had a taste, it became a catalyst for what would inevitably become her life’s work. “Music is something I live for,” says the singer. She first appeared as a vocalist on J.T. Johnson's album I'm Doing Me in 2010. After getting her start on that project, she recorded her first solo single "My Love Sounds Like Music" in 2011. Relatable and motivating, Erica’s motivation is to make people happy; to give them a way to go through life’s troubles and trials with an uplifting message. “I write about relationships and heartbreak, but I’m not sappy. I write so you won’t feel as bad about what’s happening.”

Inspired by artists of the 90’s and early 2000’s, Orange brings an old school vibe to a new age sound. “I am a real different kind of artist. I like to try different styles, I don’t put myself in a box and I like to try out new things. Any genre, any kind of music. I’m a diverse artist.”

Erica Orange’s latest project, an 8-track album titled Drink Pop Rock, will be released on May 2nd, 2016, and the artist is excitedly anticipating its debut. Out of all of the 8 superbly written tracks, Orange’s favorite is the title track, “Drink Pop Rock.” The song is about a far-from-perfect relationship, where each partner has been burned or hurt. But, instead of the song being dreary, it has an air of optimism. The song tells them to stop overthinking things, let’s just have fun with our little situation. Let’s see where it goes. Let’s dance, and be free and happy. Don’t worry about getting burned.

The future is bright for the young singer. Her ultimate dream is to make people happy and inspire them with her songs, but also to brand herself to the extent that she can pursue other passions, such as fashion, movies and more. For now, the artist will continue writing hits that she calls “songs for everyone.”

[Video] Ortega the Omega (@Ortega_Omega) - Achieve

Producing and making rhymes since the age of 12, Ortega the Omega is like a fine wine. His music and his talent continues to just keep getting better and better—something he attributes to a lot of hard work and dedication.

I feel like I have a purpose in life. Years ago, my mom got into a really bad car accident when she was about to give birth to me,” he stated. “She crashed and then the seat snapped all the way back. When she went to the hospital, the doctor said I was lucky to be alive.”

Grateful for his second chance, he’s made it his mission to live life to the fullest and pursuing his dreams in the entertainment industry. That’s why he’s pleased to announce the release of his first big, major project titled “Life Ain’t But a Dream.”

“The album has more of an old school-west coast vibe to it with a modern twist,” he described. “I’ve got some auto tune on there. I have some club songs, street songs, political songs—a little bit of everything really. Every song is different, but they’re all full of energy.”

The album also includes several guest features, including by Glasses Malone, Doll-E Girl, Shade Sheist and Young Noble from The Outlawz.

“This entire project is a compilation of two to three years of a lot of songs I recorded. I put my heart and soul into this project,” explained Ortega. “When people hear it, a lot of people tell me they really like the lyrics and hooks.”

Several of the tracks on the album are inspirational in nature including the project’s hidden track titled “Achieve.” Ortega the Omega recently released the music video to the song found here on YouTube.

Best believe, I’m going to achieve. I got the chemistry while I’m rhyming over beats,” he raps in the song. The father of three says he hopes when fans hear the song they feel inspired to pursue their dreams, and never let anyone get in the way of doing just that. “You can let your troubles, naysayers or problems sink you. You just can’t let any of it pull you down,” he said.

Spotlight on Sarah Jane (@daisyjane200)

2016 is shaping up to be a promising year for up-and-coming artist, Sarah Jane. For the last two-and-a-half years she’s been working diligently on her debut EP titled “Killer Robots.”

I’ve been working out of three studios. It’s been an amazing process,” she stated. “I’m so proud of all the work that we’ve put into it. We’ve put in a lot of long, long nights, but I feel all the hard work is going to pay off.

The upcoming EP is scheduled for a possible summer/fall release. According to rising star in the making, it promises not to disappoint. Fans will be easily captivated by it after listening to the first few bars, Jane, who is also an accomplished pianist, stated.

“The EP is really open, fun, imaginative. I really wanted to leave it up to the fans to decipher what kind of music they think it is. It’s really fun because it starts off light, then it gets more R&B and hip hop towards the third and fourth song,” she described. “It really showcases my talent, not just as a singer but as a pianist, too.”

The first single off the project is a catchy tune titled “Beautiful Magic.” It’s one of her favorite songs from the project.

It’s about finding love and finding someone who makes you feel beautiful. The beats more urban and pop,” Jane explained.

Not surprisingly, the title track from the EP, “Killer Robots,” raises a few eyebrows. Many are amused by it—obviously due to the unique title, but then quickly fall in love with the beat and lyrics.

“I really wanted to have a story that is pretty and melodic but also had some humor. It’s very simple, but it’s fun to sing a lot,” she stated. It’s cool to see the reaction of people in the studio when they listen to it. Then start laughing. Its just me and this song and the piano—and then, of course, me talking about killer robots,” she laughed.

The EP will soon be featured on iTunes. For updates and to learn more about Jane, check her out on Twitter.
